Build your own cat furniture

I LOVE Ikea, they have soo many nifty things and they are so cheap too. They even have cat furniture…well sort off.

Ikea Hacker has some great ideas for using basic ikea items, and turning them into some funky cat furniture. Cat beds, gyms, shelves and hidey spots. I like the shelves ideas, I’d be worried about being stalked from above though LOL.

We have tried making out own scratching posts in the past, without much luck. Anyone else got some handy home made cat furniture ideas?

Some other useful links to help you build your own scratching posts and cat furniture…

We always intended to try and build out own catposts but never succeeded. I like the stairs and perches though. How fun!

I’m currently trying to find some inspiration to make cat furniture for Puddy. Unfortunately we rent our house so we can’t make any marks on the walls etc – but it looks like it’d be great fun for the kitties to climb up and have a high perch! We’re going to have to make do with a free-standing thing. I’ll check out that website – Thanks!

Those shelves look pretty cool, but I think that Mom would put stuff on ‘em and prevent us from usin’ ‘em. Mom and Grandma made cat perches and covered ‘em with carpet remnants and sisal. They were GREAT, but we didn’t bring ‘em when we got the new house ‘cuz the old house had lower ceilings and the pressure pole would keep the tower from tippin’ over. The new place has a vaulted ceiling, so they sprung for commercial cat condos that cost furry much more money.

Good luck … Please post what you finally decide to make!

I have a contest! Stop by and make a guess!

Those perches are cool! Mommy loves ikea, so she’s gonna check out that link.

Daddy wanted to build something for us kitties but mommy didn’t want to wait and they bought a cool cat tree for us. But your perches are cooler!

My friend gave me this great “no-build” idea for making cat scratching posts: Take an old or leftover piece of carpet and wrap it around any table leg in your house. Tie on with string in several places. (Wrap the string around the table leg, then knot.) This really works! My cats adore it.

I ahve created shelves for my cat using the exact Ikea pieces, except I used a thinner wood member and wrapped in in an indoor outdoor carpet…she loves them and uses them all the time…it’s also a great feeding spot…(keeps it away from the her sister…the DOG)
