Mmmm dead things

For months…and MONTHS we have been hearing endless babble about half a bloody cow and sheep. Some guy at work had been telling him, anyone would think it was sort of new PS3 game or something the way he went on about it.

Trip to the butcherWe finally got around to getting a freezer big enough for all this dead animal so we put our order in and I went off to pick it up today.

The way it works, you ring up and order what you want on Monday. You have to order in bulk so you have to get a full sheep, or half a cow or pig. But you can go halfs with someone, like we did with the cow and he will half everything for you.

The animals are all grown/raised by him, and are slaughtered on the Thursday. You then go Friday afternoon or Saturday morning and he will cut it all in front of you, so you get the cuts, thickness etc just the way you like it.

I took the kids with me, was very interesting to see it done. Amazing the way he wielded the knife about.

We have soo much meat, I honestly don’t know what to do with it. I am sooo sucky at cooking, we can’t have meat and 3 veggies with all of it. We had some sort of steak tonight (I am in trouble for not getting it labelled…have bags and bags of..cow?) and it was amazing, so tender and juicy..and that’s with ME cooking it. Imagine what it would be like if you knew what you were doing :P

Bits and pieces that we didn’t want, like the ribs, shin etc..the meats cut off along with other bits and made into mince…LOTS of mince. There was 24kgs all up!

seeing all that meat on display reminds me of Dexter… wouldn’t that be an awesome name for a butchers shop!

Kelleys last blog post..Dammit. I knew there was something missing from Boo’s party. And keeping with the tradition of freakishly long blog post titles, something about Christmas too.

That’s cool that he raises and slaughters the animals himself. I think it’s usually much more ethical that way….less suffering for the animal.

I’m a vegetarian, but we just bought a bunch of meat from an ethical type farm like that. We have it in our freezer. My husband has cooked some of it.

I’m horrible at cooking…especially dead animals. So no advice here. But good luck!!!
